Urban Gardening: First Harvest!

by Beth on August 6, 2009

It seems that I got so caught up in all of that birthday cake baking earlier this week that I neglected to share one of the most exciting things that happened last weekend (well exciting in terms of my backyard garden). FIRST HARVEST!!

You see that red poking out from the leaves of our *still blight free thankfully* tomato plant? It’s in fact a red tomato! My long wait is over! Huzzah!

We also took the opportunity to cut off the one and only pepper that our two pepper plants have managed to produce. I’m not sure what’s going on there. We still have pepper buds so I’m hopeful maybe we’ll get another pepper, but not too hopeful.

Look at that perfect tomato! And all of the green tomatoes stll on the plant! Truly, this tomato thing is turning out far better than I expected it to. It looks like this one plant is going to be enough to keep us in big tomatoes for the rest of the summer! As far as cherry tomatoes go, I’m still going to have to buy those at the Baltimore Farmer’s Market, but only so I can feed my secret snack addiction–which I’m hoping to share next week.

Ah tomato perfection. Especially with some locally made mozarella and some olive oil.
