Baltimore is really a town that loves festivals. Almost all of the neighborhoods throughout the city have at least one festival through the course of the summer, and the city throws one huge festival every July–Artscape, the largest free arts festival in the US.
If there was a king of the neighborhood festivals, it would have to be the Fells Point Fun Festival, which is held the first weekend of October every year. The Fun Fest (as the locals call it) is sort of a mix between an arts festival and a big ole street party–which is appropriate for the city’s original pub/restaurant area (continuous drinking since 1730!).
I usually love Fun Fest, but I wasn’t so into it this year. I blame it on a myriad of factors–I’m a bit under the weather, Noel is in NYC with the male usual suspects (and beer gardens are no fun alone), and I have time at 30,000 feet looming. But I couldn’t resist at least taking a quick cruise through the festival to get some pictures to share with you!
How cute are these kids tshirts? Almost makes me wish I had a small one to put them on–sadly they don’t sell the shirts in cat sizes. Anyone who has ever lived in Baltimore knows how true the Smaltimore thing is–I never fail to meet someone from Baltimore no matter where I am in the world–and we should all be behind B-More For Football in Ravens Purple.
And speaking of Ravens purple, it seems that Charm City Ice has gotten the memo that purple is in, and they’ve made appropriate adjustments to their product line.
It was such a beautiful day, I just couldn’t resist walking out and taking some pictures of the harbor. As I turned around to walk back towards the festival, I realized what a crowd it was on Thames Street! Even the boats look like they’re caught in a traffic jam!
And on the way home I spied proof that even though we have blue skies and a balmy 80 degrees for the festival, big changes are just around the corner.
If you’re in Baltimore and free tomorrow, I highly recommend Fun Fest! It’s really something you should experience before you can call yourself a real Baltimorean.
