So yeah. Yesterday we had the biggest snowfall ever here in Baltimore.
Officially, it looks the storm was measured as dropping 25 inches at BWI Airport, the official measuring station for Baltimore. But here in the Ratskellar outback, it looks like we got a lot more.
Plows worked through the day, mostly to keep major roads somewhat passable. And by “somewhat” I mean they were still snow covered and slippery. All of our side streets were are still totally covered…
…making it a day where you were better off traveling by foot or on cross country skis!
There was lots of shoveling, and we’re still stranded. Noel stayed up Friday night to shovel in shifts, and then I got up Saturday morning and did some more. Both of our cars are on streets that haven’t seen a plow, but for now we’re happily stranded. I’ve been a baking and cooking fool–are you surprised?–so of course we’re well fed.
I’m really a weather nut, so for me, something like this is a REALLY BIG DEAL! I’d been tracking the storm for a week, so I was happy to see it deliver! I love the peace that snow brings, and how for at least a little while, it makes us slow down our busy lives.
To everyone in Baltimore and the Mid-Atlantic–have a happy snow day! And I’m interested to hear how you survived Snowmageddon 2010!

We have a garage, so our cars are safe and warm, but our alley has not been plowed…our street, that goes without saying, but I’ll say it…our street has not been plowed and probably never will be. Ugh. We walked to Santoni’s today for a little bit of this and that. Mainly we just wanted to see how the streets were coming along. We’ll hunker down and have some hearty polenta today. :)
I just got back from a walk to the Canton Safeway myself, and I’m shocked at how snow covered the roads are. Linwood Ave, Baltimore Street, and Eastern Ave are still mostly snow covered, and it doesn’t look like any of the side streets have been touched. Also, there are waaaay too many people out driving. Something tells me they don’t all work as first responders.
You survived! It’s just cold here and the snow is dirty and gross.
Glad you were able to make the best of it though – no better way to spend the day than in the kitchen! :D
Whew–my folks lost power, but luckily have a nice wood stove to keep warm and cook on. It looks like you have a neat park near your house–is that where the snowman is?
Libby–we luckily did not lose power but we’re still buried, no sign of plows. The park is Patterson Park, and Noel and I actually got married where all of those people are standing in the last picture! It’s really a great place, and from in front of the Pagoda you can see all the way out to the key bridge. It’s one of my favorite spots in the whole city.
What great pictures you got! Up here in NY, we thought we might get a little something. So I was seriously depressed and disappointed on Saturday to wake and find nothing on the ground! Glad you made the best of it!!
Beth, here in SW, I don’t know when we’re going to see a plow. Our streets are a hot freaking mess. Some folks with 4WD are getting out but my Mazda won’t make it anytime soon. We heard one truck spend two hours this morning spinning wheels trying to get out.
And now they’re calling for MORE SNOW tomorrow.
Wendi–We’re digging our street out. Got a bunch of neighbors, a bunch of trash cans and one pickup truck. We’re dumping truckloads of snow into the park. I know I’m not going to be able to feel my arms tomorrow!
Wahoo! Snow days for the mid-Atlantic! Beth, sounds like you’re having a wonderful time with the ‘century storm’… stay warm, stay safe, and stay comfy! Eat cookies! Drink cocoa! Make soup!
Oh wowowow!!! Are you expecting more snow this week too? My aunt who lives in Virginia just wrote on facebook they are (again) expecting snow this week. And she lost power last weekend. But not her son (he also lives in VA).
This winter has been very weird. In Toronto, we have not had a snow storm yet. I would say we just had just some flurries once a while.
Actually your pics remind me of my usual Canadian winters. Especially the ones I had growing up and when I lived in Quebec City.
Karine–they are calling for another 12-18 inches of snow tomorrow (Tuesday) into Wednesday. I’ve never seen snow like this in Baltimore–we’re just not prepared for it! Luckily, we didn’t lose power. Noel’s cousin in Vermont has the same complaint about a weird winter–they haven’t had much snow at all!
