Final Countdown and a Giveaway!

by Beth on April 25, 2010

We have entered the final countdown for the opening of Baltimore Farmer’s Market 2010! Just one week to go until my grocery store under the JFX (yes our farm market is under a highway!) reopens for the season.

farmer's markeet 2009

To say I’m excited is a bit of an understatement–I’m like a little kid the week before Christmas. The Baltimore Farmer’s Market is more than just a bunch of farmers selling produce–it’s an experience! One that I hope to share a bit with you all over the coming months.

And because I’m so excited and I’ve decided I want to share the opening of the market with you, I’ve decided to give away a market worthy set of tote bags. I was surfing on Amazon the other day and saw this set, knew I needed one for the upcoming market season and thought you might like one too. There’s a large insulated tote, a smaller grocery bag, and a mesh produce bag. And it all folds into a handy flat carrying case. Easy to stash in your car for your own trips to the market and beyond!

All you need to do to be entered in the giveaway is tell me about your own farmer’s market experience. Do you shop at them? Do you have a great one near you? Do you go to a farm? I’ll keep the contest open through Saturday, May 1. Good luck, and I can’t wait to hear about your experiences!

Beth, I’m hoping you will introduce me to the fresh pea lady because you know I have little farmer’s market experience.

Great giveaway. I know the market you are talking about. I love when I travel stopping at farmers markets and seeing what is local for the area. I just went to the one in NYC. I am super excited to be taking my students to the organic market in my village. It is a middle school field trip and I get to chaperone. I have visited there and shop there on occasion. I love it there. As for farms, do the 2 cows currently in my backyard count as living on a farm? LOL

I love the farmer’s market under the JFX- what an experience! That’s the only one I’ve been to locally, but I’d like to try the one closer to us at Baltimore Museum of Industry (at least I think there’s one there, right?).

Gwirrll…I knew I liked you! Of course the 83 is the bomb!! My hubby used to sell coffee beans for Key Coffee before Zekes hit the scene! I love the mushroom fritter sandwiches…holy cow!! Markets are our favorite places to go! We’ve been to markets in the Philippines, China, Italy and India. The colors, the smells the conversations…give you a birds eye view of the culture!! They are my fav!

I’m writing about farmer’s markets now! So. . . . . I’ll be seeing many more than the ones that are close by my neck of the woods. Locavore will be my personal goal, but telling about more markets, vendors, and offerings will be helping the locavore in all of the readers. My fave so far is the 32nd Street / Wavery market – especially since it’s year round. I found morels there! Looking forward to the under-the-bridge experience! I’ll look for you. ;)

I’m lucky enough to have a year-round Farmers Market here in KC, but the good stuff generally doesn’t start appearing until mid-April. I go every Saturday that I’m in town and pick up fresh tomatoes, rhubarb, berries and lots of peppers. If you ever visit, the KC City Market is the place to be. :-)

Well Beth, You and Noel introduce me to the Farmer’s Market experience! The bee-line for coffee and doughnuts, the slow stroll around the loop first, and then back for what you want after you’ve compared prices!! And nothing could be better than buying a whole bunch of goodies, and having everyone back to our house for brunch made from those goodies!!! (And Zeke’s Coffee of course!) I’m already drooling for the bacon, oh yeah and the bacon cheddar cheese, and the rhubarb and the peas, and that man shouting “Best Fish on the Planet Earth!” Well now I’ve gotten myself hungry and need to go make breakfast! Yum! Can’t wait for next weekend! :)

Love going to the market when I can make it into the city

My family and I moved from Northwest New Jersey where the few markets in the area were small and just ok. Now in Annapolis – there are so many in comparison. Downtown is fun since the kids can check out the boats and nosh on the fresh cheese and bread. I am looking forward to a new one opening mid-week. By Wednesday, I always seem run out on something.

Oh, I love the Waverly Farmer’s market! I have a fond memory from last summer when I got all the ingredients to make Challah French Toast (down to the eggs) at the market on a lazy Saturday. Such a fun adventure.

I love the farmer’s market! My favorite one is the San Francisco Ferry Building which offers an impressive variety of organic foods. My second favorite is the Union Square greenmarket in New York. I have visited a couple of farms on the East Coast. I am hoping to find some later this summer that have a stricter organic standard than the ones I found last year.

I have two favourite markets. The first is The Hubbards Market, 25 minutes away from home – the drive is a curvy old road along the sea. It is a smallish market with local produce, organic meats, cheeses, french pastries and breads, handmade chocolates, jewellery, bags made from recycled sails, plants, artwork and cappucinos from a local coffee bean roaster! Live music too! It is a little market with everything and it opens up again in May – can’t wait!!!
The other is the Halifax Farmer’s Market in downtown Halifax – it is is an old stone brewery with lots of curvy halls, nooks and crannies – very crowded and lots of interesting people and goods!

Edie is giving me a serious case of market envy with his description of Hubbards Market.

Hi Beth,

Just testing my computer to see if this message sends.
Thanks

I have to agree with Wendi. Market envy.

I used to love the Farmers Market in St. Michaels, MD. It was in Muscrat Park, on the waterfront. We always got fresh flowers there every Saturday for the Spa and B&B and I got the BEST tasting tomatoes ever! YUM. There is a Farmers Market in Lorton, near us that I have just learnt about and I am so excited for the local strawberries and peaches to puree for Hannah! But I’ve decided that I’m going to strap on the babybjorn and come with you and Eileen to the “under the JFX market”. Especially if there is brunch at Kenwood Manor afterwards! What day and time is it?

Sam April 29, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Hi Beth,

Thanks for another great post and scrumptious photos! I used to live right in union square in NYC where they have an amazing green market, albeit somewhat overrun by tourists on the weekends! I now live way down town, but this a good reminder to get my lazy self out of bed early this Saturday and go check things out, because really nothing beats fresh produce! I have to say I am a little partial to the markets in the fall when all things apple (which I love!) are in abundance (I can’t think of anything much better than real hot apple cider on a cool fall day mmmm), but summer produce is also amazing!

Thanks for the heads up on those bags as well, I think I will have to get myself a set!

Those are gorgeous pictures! I have an okay Farmer’s Market near me. It definitely isn’t great. I really want to find a good CSA, actually, and get most of my produce that way, but none deliver in my area or are times I can pick up, so for now I guess I’ll stick with my not bad but oh-so-small Farmer’s Market.

Kitchen Butterfly April 30, 2010 at 5:37 pm

I love farmer’s markets. My favourite one is in a little city called Leiden, not too far from where I live. I love the fact that I can get purple, holy and thai basil…..as well as an assortment of in-season produce!

Gnoe (on Graasland) May 1, 2010 at 10:52 am

There’s an organic farmers market each Friday in our town center (I live in Utrecht, Holland). Unfortunately I have to *work*, and that’s in another city, so I cannot go very often :( BUT I participate in a CSA project and the season is starting again this week. Yay! Can’t wait :)

This year I hope to score some purple carrots…

Now that we are retired and traveling about the country we have the fun of scouting out the market’s wherever we are. Our eyes are trained for those small little signs hanging in the oddest places. And then there are the ones we find by the side of the road. The best ones are is semi-small towns in the middle of an agricultural area. The farmers are super-friendly and super-helpful and love to talk about the gardens. We’re in northern California right now and the market is scheduled to open here May 8th. Can’t wait.

I have one about a 45 minute bike ride away-so I like riding my bike there.

thanks

I am so excited about the JFX Farmer’s Market tomorrow morning! It will be my first season going there, so I am very glad to hear that you have had wonderful experiences there :)

Living in Portland Oregon, I can attend a farmer’s market 6 out of 7 days a week when spring hits. The best is the downtown Saturday Farmers Market but it’s a little overwhelming and overrun with huge strollers and crazed tourists taking produce back to their hotel rooms. My favorite is my St Johns neighborhood market two blocks from my front door with vendors I am getting to know and it has well behaved dogs.
