Hot, Hot, HOT–Masser 5 Miler

by Beth on May 30, 2011

Hey everyone! Hope you’re all having an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend! We’re winding down a lovely weekend here at the beach. Sun, sand and lots of food. What else would you expect?

I also did a bit of running this weekend–I ran the Masser 5 Miler, the kickoff race in the Seashore Striders Summer Championship Racing Series. I’ve run with the Striders before, and although their races are small, I know they’re normally well run. And Masser was definitely well organized with a good course and a great atmosphere.

The only problem with this year’s Masser? It was HOT, HOT, HOT. So hot at the start, that the race director actually warned us all to slow it down and hydrate. And people were dropping like flies throughout the whole course.

I actually had a pretty good race, all things considered. I signed up for Masser because I wanted to take advantage of my half marathon fitness level to run a fast five miles. I ended up finishing right at 46 minutes, which turns out to be right on par with my half pace two weeks ago. I was surprised that I finished that well, since I was running without a watch and felt like I was going slow.

So although I didn’t quite hit my goal of running really fast (which would have been an average pace under 9 minutes–I finished with a pace of 9.12) I’m happy with the results considering it felt like I was running in a sauna. This also gets me excited for what I can do in the fall, when the temps cool off and we’re back to prime running weather. I’m so happy I’m getting faster and feeling stronger than ever before!

This race also marks two other events for me–it puts me 1/6th of the way towards completing the summer championship series, and it’s the first time I’ve ever “placed” in my age group–I was 5th overall!

That’s an amazing time, especially in that HEAT!

Sounds like a great race but wow, the heat was intense!

Thanks guys!

Mom, if you start running again, I’ll make you run races. I’m dangerous that way!

OK so I finally got out and walked today and did the just over 2 mile path in 34 minutes. Not too bad for the first walk of the year.

Glad you had a great weekend! Running in the heat is tough! I think your time is great!! Good job!

Beth, 46 minutes is an awesome time! I feel your pain; that heat is tough. I did a 10K on Sunday, and while the race was incredibly well-organized and spirited, the entire course just happened to be in the sun. Also, congrats on placiing; that’s great!

Mom–great job!

Jen–the only saving thing on this race was that it wasn’t all in the sun and we had a nice breeze off the water for most of the race. I can’t imagine doing something straight in the sun.
