Olympics Fever

by Beth on July 27, 2012

So I’ve got a bad case of something that seems to be going around…OLYMPICS FEVER!!

My Olympics Fever is pretty predictable. It shows up every two years for about three weeks. Suddenly, I find myself really caring about sports that I barely know exist the rest of the time. I’m glued to the TV, watching every event. But it’s so much fun, and so patriotic! Really, what’s not to love!

But there are a couple of things that seem to be making my Olympics Fever–let’s call it OLYFEV worse than ever before this year. 1) Social Media–I can follow athletes tweeting?! See fake rival matchups on YouTube?! See a million awesome pictures of all of the events?! Sign me up!! And apparently, according to this infographic, I’m not the only one…

2) I’m excited to see Michael Phelps go for status as the all time most decorated Olympian. Yes, I know he’s a jerk. But he’s from my hometown! I run by (one of) his Baltimore house on my normal running route through town! And I like the Phelps/Lochte match-ups!

3) As a newly minted runner–since the 2008 games–I now feel like I’m one with the runners on the track team. Which gives me a whole new level of spectator enjoyment! I know what it feels like to work hard and feel that reward at the finish line. And although most olympians run miles about twice as fast as I do, I feel like we all share the same spirit! And I have a total girl crush on Allyson Felix.

One other funny tidbit about the 2012 Olympics…way back when these games were in the bidding stage, Baltimore/DC had a bid in for them. I remember talking to one of my friends about how awesome it would be if our town actually got the Olympics (OLYFEV goes WAY back) and then we stopped and figured out how old we would be if that day ever came. When we figured out we would be THIRTY and therefore older than dirt, we were pretty disgusted. It’s funny how times have changed! Now thirty seems like a cake walk!

So is anyone surprised that tonight night I’ll be curled up in front of the TV, watching the games with my Olympic Bingo card? Nope, no one. And I’ll pretty much be there for the next 14 days, except when I’m on the road chasing my own big racing dreams.

I have to admit, I never usually pay much attention to the olympics but I think social media has me more interested than before. I watched some of the swimming and running trials already and will likely watch some of the olympics as well. Michael Phelp’s mom and dad went to high school with my mom so I understand your connection there. :)

Ahhh, now that is something I can comment on !! ;-) I skipped over real fast all the peach desserts. But Olympics, that deserves a comment!! Seriously I don’t why others don’t have olympic fever. Fools!

This is kind of a relief knowing that it is not happening only to me! : )) Last week I start following on social media more than 20 athletes and no matter I am on computer on TV I find myself watching or reading about the Olympics.
