Hey, it’s the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day and you know what that means here in Baltimore? Well other than the fact that I’m about to get a year older, it means that it’s time for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Kelly St. Patrick’s Day Race!
This is the third time I’ve registered for this race, but only the second time I’ve actually run it. Because last year I was hurt. No bueno. This year, I was coming back from a week of very light running on the advice of my PT after I saw him with a nasty flare up of shin splints in my left leg. Ouch. But no matter what, I knew I was doing this race, because it was my friend Elizabeth’s very first race! It seems after 3 years of hearing me go on and on about running, she wanted to try it for herself! And she did great AND didn’t hate it! Running WIN!
And you know what? It didn’t suck for me either. My shin felt great all week, but I decided to tape it anyways (KT Tape Magic) and it didn’t bother me at all during the race. This race is huge, and crowded, so its not really a place to go out for a PR, so I had decided to run moderately hard and see how it went. And it went really well. 26.30, exactly tying the PR I set last summer at the 5k distance. And although I was running hard, I wasn’t running that hard, which gives me hope that I’ve still in pretty good shape and ready to race this weekend in DC. It was a bit hotter than I would have liked, but luckily, race temps are looking cooler this weekend!
