This past weekend I set a new PR, ran my furthest ever race in my hometown, and entertained some very fine Peacocks. A great weekend indeed!
But let’s back up a second. When Charles Street 12 was originally announced earlier this year, I SWORE up and down that there was no way on earth I would consider doing it. A 12 mile race in Baltimore City, in AUGUST? Sounds like heat torture. But then Charrissa decided to target the Lehigh Valley Marathon as a goal race, and guess what? She needed a half marathon tune up race this past weekend, and Charles Street 12 was the best thing she could find, because you know, other people think half marathons in August are also heat torture. She asked if she could visit and a Peacock weekend was born! When Robyn got wind of the arrangement, she decided to join, since she could use it as a tune up and celebrate her birthday with us!
We’ve had unseasonably cool weather for most of the summer here in Baltimore. I can’t remember a summer this cool. So although we didn’t have the hot and miserable race I had been expecting, we did have a day with moderate humidity. If it had been sunny, it would have been a miserable sweatfest. But the combination of clouds and trees kept it pretty enjoyable for me. Even considering the hills, which we should talk about for a minutes. This race was advertised as all downhill, and the race profile looked like this:
Yeah, so it felt like A LOT more rollers than this map indicates. Like a lot. But that was also okay, because I had a very definite plan going into this race. This was a long run. Nothing but a long run. And I would treat it as such. And as a result, it was an all around excellent experience. I was smiling, high fiveing kids, thanking police, and running with the unicorns. Really!
I finished in 1.59.18, 9.58 pace. Right on track for a long run, I say.
Other Peacocks also had excellent race days, and Robyn won third place in the 30-39 age group!! A good way to ring out the last day of an age year.
And then there was much celebrating–starting with brunch!
